Bendigo Independent, 12 March 1901, p. 2
Story:
This extract from the Bendigo Independent illustrates failing water supply in Bendigo in the later years of the Federation drought. The cumulative effect of years of below average rainfall meant water levels in the Coliban System (the city’s main source of domestic water supply) dropped dramatically. While drought is usually discussed in terms of agriculture, this article suggests its impact on urban dwellers. The article, however, depicts Bendigo residents as ‘wasteful’ and failing to abide by restrictions. (Moralising by the press about the profligate use of water by urban dwellers – often in contrast to the heroic battle of farmers against dry seasons – is a continuing theme in contemporary portrayals).
